Overview

PRP established the clinical case for autologous growth factor therapy in hair restoration clearly and with good evidence. For a significant proportion of patients, it produces exactly the improvement they are seeking — measurable reduction in shedding, improved hair quality, and progressive improvement in density. For others, the improvement is meaningful but incomplete — the density improvement hoped for does not fully materialise, and the response varies between sessions in ways that cannot be accounted for.

This variability has a biological explanation. Standard PRP preparation concentrates whole platelets, whose growth factors are released upon activation at the point of injection. The concentration of growth factors available depends on the patient's individual platelet count, centrifugation efficiency, and the degree of platelet activation achieved — variables determined by the patient's biology on the day of the blood draw, not by the preparation process. In some patients, the available growth factor concentration falls short of the threshold at which significant follicular stimulation occurs.

GFC was developed to address this directly. By activating and lysing the concentrated platelets before extraction, GFC releases all growth factor content from the platelet alpha-granules under controlled laboratory conditions and concentrates the growth factor-rich supernatant specifically for delivery. What is injected is a concentrated solution of active growth factors at a level the preparation process determines — consistent across every patient and every session.

What GFC Actually Does Differently

The preparation of GFC follows the same opening steps as PRP — blood draw, centrifugation — and diverges at the step that changes the clinical result. The concentrated platelets are activated and lysed in the laboratory: a mechanical process that opens the platelet membrane and releases the entire contents of the alpha-granules — PDGF, VEGF, EGF, TGF-β, IGF-1 — into the surrounding plasma. The growth factor-rich supernatant is extracted and further concentrated, removing platelet membrane debris and pro-inflammatory components not relevant to the regenerative response. Comparative studies consistently demonstrate superior outcomes for GFC over PRP in hair count, shaft diameter, and patient-reported satisfaction.

The clinical consequence is a more significant and more predictable follicular response. Dermal papilla cells and follicular stem cells receive a stronger growth signal. The anagen growth phase is extended more completely. Perifollicular vascularisation improves more significantly. And because potency is determined by the preparation process rather than individual biological variability, results are more consistent between patients — and between sessions — than standard PRP can guarantee.
