There is a moment — different for every patient, but recognisable in all of them — when hair loss stops being something that might slow down and becomes something that needs to be addressed directly. The hairline has moved too far. The crown is too thin to conceal. The texture and density of the remaining hair no longer compensates for what has been lost. They are ready to consider something permanent.

FUE hair transplant is appropriate for patients at this stage — patients whose hair loss has progressed to the point where redistribution of permanent follicles is the most effective clinical answer, and who have sufficient donor density in the permanent zones to provide the grafts needed for meaningful coverage. It is not for patients whose hair loss is still progressing rapidly, where operating without stabilising the loss first produces results that look incomplete within a few years. And it is not appropriate for patients whose expectations exceed what their available donor supply can realistically support. These assessments are made honestly at the pre-surgical consultation — because a transplant that is appropriate, performed at the right time, on a realistic plan, produces a result the patient is genuinely satisfied with for decades.

FUE is performed as a day procedure at Ministry of Skin under tumescent local anaesthesia — dilute local anaesthetic infiltrated into the treatment areas, providing complete anaesthesia. No general anaesthesia is required. No hospital admission is needed.

What FUE Actually Involves

The procedure begins with hairline design — the most artistically significant component of the entire surgery. The shape, height, density distribution, and direction of the new or restored hairline are discussed and agreed with the patient before a single follicle is extracted. The temporal peaks, the lateral corners, the irregularity that distinguishes a natural hairline from a manufactured one, the relationship between the hairline and the patient's face shape, brow height, and long-term expected hair loss pattern — all of these are incorporated into the design. This is where the aesthetic outcome of the transplant is determined. The surgery that follows executes a design that has already been established.

Follicular unit extraction proceeds using a fine circular punch of 0.8–1.0mm diameter — each follicular unit extracted individually and placed in temperature-controlled holding solution. Recipient sites are created in the pattern, angle, direction, and density determined by the hairline design. The grafts are then placed one by one — each positioned at the exact angle and direction that produces a natural growth pattern in the finished result. Total procedure time is 5–8 hours depending on the number of grafts required.
