This accumulated damage sits in the epidermis and the dermis — at a depth that topical treatments reach only partially and that non-ablative energy devices stimulate without removing.

Laser resurfacing addresses it at both levels simultaneously. The ablative component — controlled removal of the damaged epidermal and superficial dermal layers — clears the accumulated photodamage, pigmentation, and structural irregularity from the skin surface. The thermal component — the heat deposited in the dermis by the laser energy — initiates a powerful collagen remodelling response: fibroblasts activate, new collagen is synthesised, and the dermal architecture progressively improves over 3–6 months following each session. G3 CO₂ Laser operates at 10,600nm — a wavelength with extremely high water absorption that produces powerful, controlled ablation of the targeted skin layer. Delivered in fractional mode, it is the most ablative platform in the Ministry of Skin portfolio, producing the most significant collagen remodelling of any non-surgical resurfacing treatment. It is the platform of choice for significant atrophic acne scarring, advanced photoageing, significant skin texture irregularity, and presentations where the depth of structural change required exceeds what Er:YAG resurfacing can provide. The recovery period — typically 7–10 days — reflects the depth of ablation and is the appropriate exchange for the degree of structural change the treatment produces.

Fotona SP Dynamis — Er:YAG operates at 2940nm — the highest water absorption of any clinical laser wavelength — producing extremely precise superficial ablation with minimal thermal spread. The Er:YAG is the preferred resurfacing platform for patients who require meaningful resurfacing with shorter recovery — typically 3–5 days — for patients where a more conservative ablative approach is clinically appropriate, and for presentations where the precision of Er:YAG's minimal thermal dispersion is a clinical advantage over the broader thermal effect of CO₂. For fine lines, mild acne scarring, skin quality improvement, and photoageing presentations where significant resurfacing is not required, Er:YAG frequently achieves an excellent result within a recovery profile that fits into a normal professional schedule.

What Laser Resurfacing Treats

Acne scarring — particularly boxcar and superficial rolling scars — responds to fractional laser resurfacing through the ablation of scar edges, thermal stimulation of collagen in the scar base, and progressive remodelling of the scar architecture over a series of sessions. Laser resurfacing for acne scarring is used at Ministry of Skin in combination with MNRF — the two modalities addressing the scar at different tissue depths and through different mechanisms for a more comprehensive outcome than either produces independently.

Photoageing and sun damage — the textural irregularity, pigmentary change, and structural deterioration produced by cumulative UV exposure — responds to fractional laser resurfacing through the removal of the photodamaged epidermal layer and the stimulation of new, organised collagen in the dermis beneath. Results include improved skin texture, more even tone, reduced solar lentigines and surface pigmentation, and improved skin quality that reflects the replacement of damaged tissue with healthier, better-organised skin.

Fine lines — both dynamic-associated lines that persist at rest and static surface lines that reflect dermal thinning — respond to the combined ablative and thermal effect of laser resurfacing. For established periorbital and perioral fine lines that reflect significant dermal thinning, laser resurfacing often produces the most significant improvement of any non-injectable treatment.

Preparation, What to Expect, and the Recovery Period

Pre-treatment preparation includes 4–6 weeks of daily SPF 50+ and, in some patients, a period of topical conditioning — Vitamin A and C preparations — to optimise the skin's regenerative response. A test patch is performed before the first full-area session. Post-CO₂ resurfacing: 7–10 days of healing involving redness, peeling, and progressive re-epithelialisation, followed by 3–6 months of progressive collagen maturation. Post-Er:YAG resurfacing: a 3–5 day healing period with milder redness and peeling, with the same progressive collagen maturation over the following weeks.
