The Fat That Won't Move. Will.

Controlled Cooling. Selective Apoptosis. Permanent Elimination. — Cryolipolysis at Ministry of Skin uses the Crystal Pro system — an FDA-cleared platform with a comprehensive applicator range — to apply precisely controlled cooling to specific subcutaneous fat deposits, selectively triggering the permanent death of fat cells while leaving all surrounding tissue entirely unaffected.
Overview

Some fat deposits are not a matter of effort. Patients who arrive at Ministry of Skin with a cryolipolysis concern are almost never patients who have been sedentary or inattentive. They are often patients who are otherwise fit, whose weight is stable, and who have spent months — sometimes years — in the expectation that one specific area would eventually respond to the training and the discipline being applied to the rest of their body. It has not responded. It will not respond. The lower abdomen does not reduce further. The flanks remain disproportionate. The inner thighs hold their volume regardless of what surrounds them. This is not a failure of commitment. It is a characteristic of subcutaneous fat — that it depletes non-uniformly, that some areas have a higher density of fat cells genetically predisposed to resist lipolytic stimulation, and that for these areas, the most consistent results come not from trying harder but from intervening directly.

Cryolipolysis intervenes directly. The science behind it is precise: fat cells enter apoptosis at temperatures that leave surrounding tissue — skin, nerves, blood vessels — entirely unharmed. This selectivity is not a property of the device. It is a biological property of adipocytes themselves, established in research by Harvard scientists who observed that fat cells are uniquely vulnerable to cold injury compared to other tissue types. The Crystal Pro system harnesses this property — delivering a precisely controlled temperature to the treatment area for a precisely calibrated duration, producing the selective fat cell apoptosis that the biology supports, in a treatment that is comfortable for most of its duration and requires no recovery of any clinical significance.

At Ministry of Skin, the treated area receives a 2-minute manual massage immediately following applicator removal — a step consistently demonstrated in research to enhance fat cell apoptosis by up to 68% by mechanically disrupting the crystallised fat cells before the tissue warms. This step is performed as standard for every treatment.

What Cryolipolysis Actually Does

When the Crystal Pro applicator draws the targeted fat deposit into its cooling plates, the subcutaneous fat tissue is brought to the precise temperature at which fat cell apoptosis is initiated — typically between −9°C and −11°C — while the contact cooling on the skin surface is maintained at a temperature that ensures the overlying tissue is not damaged. The fat cells in the targeted tissue enter a controlled inflammatory process — panniculitis — that activates the body's macrophage response over the 8–12 weeks following treatment. The macrophages progressively engulf and transport the apoptotic fat cells to the lymphatic system, where they are permanently eliminated. The result is a measurable reduction in the fat layer thickness of the treated area — typically 20–25% per session — as the treated fat cell population is cleared.

The surrounding tissue — the overlying skin, the blood vessels and nerves within the fat layer, the muscle beneath — is unaffected throughout this process, because the temperature required to initiate fat cell apoptosis does not produce significant biological damage in these tissue types. This is the mechanism that makes cryolipolysis safe and specific: it does not damage what it is not directed at, because what it is directed at is uniquely vulnerable to the temperature it delivers.

Treatment Areas & Results

The Crystal Pro Applicator Range

The Crystal Pro system's comprehensive applicator range covers all major treatment areas with applicators shaped and sized specifically for the anatomy of each zone. The abdomen — upper and lower — with large flat applicators that accommodate the greater tissue volume of the central abdomen. The flanks and love handles with curved applicators that conform to the lateral contour. The inner thighs with applicators designed for medial placement. The outer thighs and saddlebags. The upper arms. The bra fat and back rolls. The submental area — the double chin — with a specifically designed small applicator for the more delicate tissue geometry beneath the chin. The knees. Each applicator is selected by the treating clinician based on the specific anatomy of the area being treated.

Multiple areas can be treated in a single session using different applicators, with typical individual applicator treatment times of 35–60 minutes depending on the area. For patients treating multiple areas, parallel treatment with two applicators simultaneously is possible where the anatomical geometry allows.

Results, Realistic Expectations, and What Permanence Actually Means

A single cryolipolysis session produces approximately 20–25% reduction in the fat layer thickness of the treated area — measured by ultrasound in clinical studies and visible to patients and clinicians at review appointments 8–12 weeks following the session. The treated fat cells are permanently eliminated: the body does not regenerate adipocytes in the treated area, and the cells that have been cleared by the macrophage response do not return. This is the sense in which cryolipolysis is described as permanent — not that the result is immune to weight gain, but that the specific fat cells eliminated are gone for good.

Significant weight gain will cause the remaining fat cells in the treated area to expand — but because there are fewer of them than before treatment, the expansion is proportionally less than in areas that have not been treated. For patients who want greater reduction in the same area, a second session can be performed 8–12 weeks after the first — once the first session's results have fully developed and the clinician can assess the degree of further treatment warranted. Most patients achieve their desired result in 1–2 sessions per treatment area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the reduction permanent?

The fat cells eliminated by cryolipolysis are permanently destroyed and cleared from the body. They do not regenerate. The reduction in the treated fat deposit is permanent provided weight remains stable. Significant weight gain will expand remaining fat cells throughout the body — but the treated area, having fewer cells, will expand less proportionally than untreated areas.

The first 5–10 minutes of treatment involve an intense cold sensation and the suction of the applicator drawing the tissue in — sensations that are most pronounced at initiation and reduce significantly as the tissue is cooled and naturally anaesthetised by temperature. The remainder of the treatment — typically 35–50 minutes — is comfortable for most patients, many of whom read or rest throughout. The 2-minute post-treatment massage can be more uncomfortable as the tissue is temporarily firm and cold.

Most patients achieve their desired result in 1–2 sessions per treatment area. A single session produces 20–25% fat layer reduction. For patients wanting greater reduction in the same area, a second session is assessed and scheduled 8–12 weeks after the first.

Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia is a rare adverse effect — occurring in approximately 1 in 4,000 treatments — in which the treated fat area paradoxically enlarges rather than reduces, developing a firm, gradually increasing mass in the shape of the applicator used. The mechanism is not fully understood. It requires liposuction for management. This risk is discussed in full at your pre-treatment consultation at Ministry of Skin.

No — cryolipolysis reduces the fat layer and does not produce skin tightening. For patients with both fat deposits and skin laxity in the same area, Endolift — which addresses both simultaneously through laser lipolysis and collagen tightening — is frequently the more appropriate treatment. Your dermatologist will advise on the most appropriate option for your specific anatomy at consultation.
